Cyclist dies in collision after chase
YOUNGSTOWN — The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Warren Post is investigating a fatal collision between a motorcycle and a Ford Mustang on Thursday evening at Salt Springs Road and Division Street in Youngstown after a high-speed chase that began in Trumbull County.
A trooper began chasing a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle around 8:30 p.m. on state Route 11 near the Interstate 80 interchange in Liberty, according to an OSHP report. The report states speeds reached more than 100 mph, and the trooper was attempting to pull over the driver for speeding when the chase began.
The pursuit continued into Youngstown when the motorcyclist, later identified as Adam Mihely, 33, of Jefferson, in Ashtabula County, took the exit off Interstate 80 / 680 onto Stephens Street and Salt Springs Road. The trooper lost sight of the motorcycle and ended the chase.
A short time later, police were notified of a crash between Mihely and the Mustang at Division Street and Salt Springs Road on the West Side. The report states Robert Moyer, 32, of Youngstown, was southbound in the Mustang on Salt Springs and was attempting to turn left onto Division Street when Mihely veered left of center to pass Moyer and crashed into his vehicle.
The motorcycle caught fire, and Mihely was thrown off, the patrol report states.
The Youngstown Police Department, Youngstown Street Department, Youngstown Fire Department and Mahoning County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
