Canfield BOE approves $500K paving program

CANFIELD — There was a lot of money moving around at the Canfield Board of Education special meeting earlier this week.

The board approved a big paving project and moved a big chunk of carryover funds to protect it for future projects.

Bids for the paving project at Canfield High School were all over the place, with the winning bid going to Lindy Paving at $543,554.76. Other bids included Miller-Yount Paving at $575,000, Phillips Paving at $617,000, R.T. Vernal Paving at $658,530, and The Shelly Company at $602,000.

The paving project will take place at the high school and will include the south student parking lot, the east side teachers’ parking lot and the north driveway, which also will include drainage work.

“Lindy will begin on July 7 and work one week, Monday through Friday,” said Superintendent Joe Knoll. “They will take a break and open up the parking on July 13 and 14 when the high school will host a huge soccer tournament.”

He said work will continue on July 14 and the paving project is expected to be completed by the end of July. He added the islands in the south parking lot will be removed.

“We’ve got to get this done,” Knoll said.

Another important issue the board dealt with at the special meeting was the formation of a new 070 Capital Projects Fund and then moving $4 million of carryover from the general fund into the new fund.

“I feel this is necessary to protect our carryover,” said school treasurer Pattie Prince.

She said the state budget bill that passed Monday included a limit on carryover amounts for school districts. Gov. Mike DeWine line-item vetoed that provision, but the legislature plans to override his veto.

She said by using the 070 account, the $4 million would be protected. Without moving it, the district could risk losing the funds and being forced to give it all back to property owners.

Knoll said it is important to have the funds available for the middle school if needed. He said the hope was to have a new middle school, but since that hasn’t happened yet, the district may have to put money into the present building.

In other business, the board:

• Heard from Knoll, who spoke on a change in the school calendar to include two professional development days when students would be off. The first will be Dec. 1, which will extend the Thanksgiving break, and the second day would be March 6, 2026.

• Approved the girls’ golf team for an out-of-state field trip to Oak Tree Golf Course in West Middlesex, Pa. on Aug. 15 to participate in a golf tournament.

Starting at $3.23/week.
