Poland gets $650K from Safe Routes to School
POLAND — The state awarded a $650,000 Safe Routes to School grant to the village of Poland.
The funding includes high-visibility crosswalks at 10 signalized intersections as well as new sidewalks on College Street, Lee Drive, Michigan Avenue and Ohio Avenue. The funding will also go toward a rapid-flashing beacon at College and Lee streets, pedestrian countdown signals and push buttons at state Route 170 and Nesbitt Road, and pedestrian lighting on College and Cortland streets.
The Poland project was among 24 awarded Tuesday by the state for infrastructure around K-12 schools to make it safer for students to walk and ride bicycles there. Overall, $7.6 million was awarded Tuesday.
“These are more than just transportation projects, they are investments in the health, safety and future of our children,” said Gov. Mike DeWine. “These funds will help ensure more Ohio students have safe, accessible options to get to school.”
Since its inception in 2005, Safe Routes to School has awarded about $90 million to improve student safety and promote active transportation.
