Judge to rule on trying teen as an adult in murder case

YOUNGSTOWN — A probable cause hearing wrapped up this week in Mahoning County Juvenile Court in the March 24 shooting death of Keondre Lewis, 19, in a home on Rhoda Avenue on the West Side.

The 14-year-old boy accused of shooting Lewis is charged with murder and a gun specification.

He attended the hearing with his attorney, Walter Madison. He is being detained in the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

Judge Theresa Dellick will issue a decision later on whether to transfer the boy’s case to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for him to be tried as an adult, court officials said Tuesday.

A brother of Lewis, who was in the home at the time of the shooting, was among those who testified Monday. He said the defendant is a cousin. He went downstairs after hearing the gunshot, saw his brother, went upstairs and got his shoes, and chased after his cousin. But “the police got him,” he said.

Starting at $3.23/week.
