Ballot set for Campbell election

CAMPBELL — Two candidates — council President Joseph G. Mazzocca Jr. and Bill Valentino, the municipal court bailiff — filed to run for Campbell mayor.

Wednesday was the filing deadline for candidates running for mayor, council president, the four council ward seats and law director to file in Campbell under its city charter.

The charter calls for a Sept. 23 runoff with the top two candidates for each position advancing to the Nov. 4 general election. But because no more than two candidates filed for any position, the runoff isn’t needed and every candidate who submitted nominating petitions will be on the general election ballot if the Mahoning County Board of Elections determines their petitions are in order.

The mayoral seat opened with the April 2 death of Bryan K. Tedesco, who was serving his second two-year term.

Tedesco’s death resulted in George Levendis, then the city council president, being elevated to mayor. Levendis had no interest in running for mayor and instead filed again for council president.

Also filing for council president was Dennis Puskarcik, a former Campbell police chief who resigned in January 2019 and was subsequently found guilty in municipal court in February 2020 to a reduced misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

Mazzocca is a former 3rd Ward councilman who became council president shortly after Levendis started serving as mayor.

Valentino was elected in 2023 to represent the 4th Ward, but he never served as he was hired before he took office as the municipal court bailiff. Robert Stanko was appointed to serve Valentino’s term.

The only city council race to have two candidates file is for 3rd Ward between Ryan J. Stanko, who was appointed to succeed Mazzocca, and Mary Janek, a former Campbell Memorial High School science department chairwoman.

Also, two candidates filed for law director: incumbent Lamprini Mathews and challenger Brett Billec.
