Truck strikes, kills Wellsville schoolboy
MADISON TOWNSHIP — The 9-year-old boy who was killed after being struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle at the end of a private drive on state Route 7 in Madison Township on Saturday has not been identified by name, but has been identified as a student at Daw Elementary in
Wellsville.
Wellsville Schools Superintendent David Cappuzzello confirmed to local media outlets that the child and his siblings are students in the district.
He added that grief counselors will be at the school to help the staff and students in the wake of Saturday’s tragic events.
According to the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the boy was riding his bicycle when he was hit and killed around 5:45 p.m. on state Route 7 about a half-mile south of Beaver Local High School.
The Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office, St. Clair Township Police and the patrol responded. The West Point Fire Department was on scene with an ambulance.
The boy was taken to an East Liverpool Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
The vehicle that struck that child was a Ford F-150 driven by a Lisbon resident who stayed at the scene, the patrol said.
The OSHP is investigating the accident.
The full accident report is not expected until later in the week at the earliest and no further information was available Sunday.
