Regional Chamber announces college intern program

Staff report

The Youngstown / Warren Regional Chamber has launched a new student engagement and workforce retention initiative designed to foster connections between college interns and the Mahoning Valley.

Youth Impact aims to create pathways for skilled young professionals to remain in the region after graduation by immersing them in the area’s professional, social and cultural assets.

The program will feature one or two fun and educational off-site program days scheduled throughout the summer. These days will include opportunities for college interns to explore local entertainment and cultural experiences, connect with peers and emerging leaders and engage with dynamic speakers who are respected business and community figures.

Interns will also be introduced to local young professionals who have chosen to live and build careers in the Valley, demonstrating the tangible benefits of staying in the region.

“This initiative is more than just a summer engagement opportunity — it’s a long-term investment in the Mahoning Valley’s future workforce,” said Brenda Linert, director of Community Impact for the Regional Chamber. “By introducing interns to the dynamic opportunities and supportive professional community here, we’re encouraging them to envision a future rooted right here in our region.”

The program is open to college students from any university who are working as paid summer interns at businesses that are members of the Chamber. To participate, employers must agree to allow their interns to attend these off-site program days while continuing to receive their regular hourly wages. In addition, employers are encouraged to complete a brief questionnaire about their interns within three days of learning about the program and reach out to the Chamber for any questions or further guidance.

Employers interested in taking part in Youth Impact can contact Brenda Linert, Regional Chamber director of Community Impact, at brenda@regionalchamber.com.
