McDonald names new high school principal

McDONALD — With current McDonald High School Principal Gary Carkido being named the district’s new school superintendent starting in August, the board of education on Tuesday named Meghan Watson as the new high school principal.

Watson, who currently serves as special education coordinator for both McDonald and Maplewood schools, was selected from among 12 applicants who sought the principal position.

Watson was granted a two-year contract effective Aug. 1 through July 31, 2027.

In the first year of the agreement, she will receive a salary of $96,000 for the 2025-26 period, and in the following year, she will earn $98,880 for the 2026-27 period.

Superintendent Kevin O’Connell, who leaves July 31 to become the new superintendent in Maplewood schools, said he will look for a new person to replace Watson, who splits her time between the two districts.

Carkido, who has been with the district for 27 years, has served 17 years as high school principal.

In other business, O’Connell said the only major project scheduled to be done this summer in McDonald will be the replacement of the flat roof at Roosevelt Elementary School.

He said work at the football stadium is done, with no projects scheduled this summer there.

In other action, the board:

• Hired Alelee Mollica as a teacher at Roosevelt Elementary.

• Approved holding an elementary school summer program July 28 to Aug. 8. The high school will hold a credit recovery program June 9 to July 3.

Starting at $3.23/week.
