Man shot by police in Boardman returns to court
YOUNGSTOWN — A jury was seated Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for the retrial of Damian J. Cessna, 28, on one count of felonious assault for a 2021 confrontation with a Boardman police officer that ended with Cessna being shot multiple times.
Cessna went on trial in September, but the jury could not decide whether to find him guilty of felonious assault, so prosecutors decided to try Cessna again.
Opening statements in the trial will begin at 9 a.m. today before Judge Maureen Sweeney.
The felonious assault charge relates to allegations that Cessna charged toward the officer with a knife just before the officer shot him.
The altercation on July 13, 2021, began when officers spotted him on South Avenue riding a bicycle and carrying a baseball bat.
