Boardman stolen car crashes in Canfield

CANFIELD — A juvenile has been arrested and police are looking for two other people after a stolen car crashed into a ditch Tuesday evening.

Canfield police Sgt. Chad DeBarr said the investigation is ongoing but personal items were found in the car that they expect will lead to arrests soon.

“We only located one of the suspects, but items in the vehicle gave us leads on who they are, and our detective division is working to identify them,” he said. “It is only a matter of time.”

On Monday morning, a woman in Boardman reported her 2018 Buick Enclave stolen from her Oak Knoll Drive home around 5 a.m.

The Boardman police report states that the woman’s security camera only takes intermittent video and so it only showed the vehicle backing out of the driveway, but not the people in it.

The woman said she believes the car was left unlocked with the key inside it, but did not say if she left it there or someone else did.

The woman told police she had seen a young male walking through the neighborhood carrying an umbrella and looking at driveways as he passed.

DeBarr said about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, one of Canfield’s FLOCK license plate cameras picked up the plate and notified police.

DeBarr said Canfield has 15 to 17 cameras set up at city entrances, which read license plates and notify police if the registered owner has warrants or if the vehicle is stolen.

The Buick entered Canfield via East Fairground Boulevard and U.S. Route 224 heading west.

“One of our patrolmen was able to locate it on Herbert road, and verified it was the same vehicle, then attempted to initiate a stop near the Star (Extruded Shapes Inc.) factory,” he said. “The vehicle did not comply, and a pursuit began.”

But the pursuit did not last long. DeBarr said the Buick only traveled about a quarter of a mile before crashing into a ditch along Herbert Road near the intersection at South Turner Road.

He said there were three people in the car. One of them ran east while the other two ran west into a wooded area.

“We caught a juvenile that went westbound into the woods, but there is still an ongoing investigation because we still have two suspects we did not locate that night,” DeBarr said.

The department had help from Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office with one of its drone units, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which brought a helicopter from Columbus to aid in the search, and assistance from Mill Creek MetroParks police. Canfield also deployed two of its own canine units and a drone unit. DeBarr said they called off the search a little after 9 p.m.

DeBarr said they are still working to upload the police body camera video, which is taking more time because of the number of officers who were wearing cameras that evening.

He said they do not know yet if the other two suspects are juveniles. The one suspect they arrested, who is 17, has been uncooperative and is in custody at the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

DeBarr said the full extent of the damage to the Buick is uncertain but the front bumper and undercarriage were considerably damaged in the crash. He said the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office is handling the crash report because it occurred in Canfield Township, where the sheriff’s office has jurisdiction.
