MASURY — A 65-year-old woman is dead and her brother is in the Trumbull County jail following a shooting discovered Saturday morning.

Janice Zanolli, 65, was found at her house at 7938 Third St. with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head, according to Brookfield police Chief Aaron M. Kasiewicz.

Police went to the house at 10:15 a.m. Saturday for a welfare check after a family member said Zanolli couldn’t be reached, Kasiewicz said.

In another room, officers found the victim’s brother, John Zanolli, 61, with a rifle to his head and threatening to commit suicide. He also lived at the house. After about 30 minutes of negotiations, officers were able to use stun guns and remove the firearm from him after a brief struggle.

Several police departments and the Trumbull County Homicide Task Force still were on the scene late Saturday afternoon.

John Zanolli is in the Trumbull County jail and will be charged with aggravated murder, according to Kasiewicz.

The father of the victim and suspect, F. Patrick Zanolli, 91, died from a sudden illness Sept. 9, according to his obituary. He was an industrial arts teacher for the Brookfield Local School District.

According to the obituary, his other children are Stephen L. Zanolli Sr., also of Masury, Scott of Berea and Jeff W. of Brookfield.

PREVIOUS HOMICIDE

It was the second homicide in Masury in about two months.

On Dec. 20, a woman was found shot to death at 545 Lucy St. after a 24-hour standoff with the suspect, Andrew Reedy, 57, in what police said was a domestic violence situation involving Reedy and his ex-girlfriend, Jane Payton, 57.

Reedy shot himself, but survived, and was indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury on charges of aggravated murder and aggravated burglary. Prosecutors allege that Reedy, who had recently been evicted from Payton’s home, broke back into the residence and fatally shot her with a shotgun shortly after the eviction was enforced.

During his arraignment, Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Chris Becker argued against bond, citing Reedy’s probation status at the time of the shooting.
