Woman charged with drunken driving after accident near kids’ school

YOUNGSTOWN — Angela O’Mellan, 40, was arraigned Tuesday in Youngstown Municipal Court on two types of drunken driving charges and failure to control in a Monday incident in which she allegedly sideswiped a car near Valley Christian School on her way to pick up her children from school.

A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to the school on Southern Boulevard at 2:35 p.m. Monday for an accident on Wychwood Lane, which is on one side of the school.

A teacher said O’Mellan’s Cadillac sideswiped a Jeep on Wychwood and then pulled into the parking lot to pick up her kids.

The school would not let her leave with her kids “because she showed signs of being drunk and had an odor of alcoholic drink as she was standing in front of the teacher,” the report states.

The officer walked into the building and found O’Mellan walking toward him. She was “stumbling and having a hard time keeping her balance while she was walking,” the report states.

She had a “very strong odor of alcoholic drink.” Once it was confirmed she was O’Mellan, “I asked Angela what happened, and she responded in a slurred, mumbled tone, ‘They say I hit something. I’m here to pick up my kids.'” Her eyes were bloodshot, red and glossy, the report states. She admitted to having had drinks.

One of her children “came around the corner and asked her brother ‘what was going on,'” the report states. O’Mellan was placed in a cruiser. The officer saw light damage to her car and the Jeep. O’Mellan was taken to the police station, where she was tested for OVI and registered a .205, which is more than double the legal driving limit of 0.08, the report states. She was released to her husband.

The report does not mention who took the children home. O’Mellan returns to court at 10:15 a.m. March 17 for a pretrial hearing, court records show.
