Chamber representative pays visit to Canfield Township

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — The government affairs director for the Youngstown / Warren Regional Chamber attended the Canfield Township trustees meeting Tuesday.

Nico Morgione spoke about his role at the chamber and asked how he could help the township.

“As director of government affairs, I want to understand the projects our local governments are working on,” he said. “I want to see how the chamber could help.”

He mentioned that he could help with grants and even bring concerns to the Statehouse in Columbus. He encouraged trustees to contact him should they have any problems for which he can assist.

Chairman Brian Governor replied, “I just have two words from our residents … property taxes.”

In other business, Public Works Supervisor Bob Burkett reported on the status of the VAC truck that was ordered. The truck was previously discussed at the Oct. 8 meeting and was estimated to cost around $499,000. Trustees approved the purchase at a subsequent meeting.

Burkett said plans are to build the vehicle in July. He said it will take about 30 days and the truck should be in service by August.

The VAC truck is used for cleaning sewers and catch basins. Its operation helps to prevent storm sewer flooding due to blockages.

Burkett said he does have concerns over the length of the truck and how equipment is placed on it, mainly because of limited space at the township garage.

In a related matter, Burkett mentioned the rental of a street sweeper for 2025.

“We are getting the equipment April 4 through April 14,” he told trustees. “We will be sweeping all the township streets with curbs and gutters.”

He noted that his crew has been working on trimming trees along those roads and will be cleaning up the debris resulting from that work.

Burkett also mentioned the salt contract for 2025 through a state purchasing agreement. He suggested going with a 1,000-ton contract for the 2025-26 season.

“Once the contract kicks in, I suggest we immediately order 300 tons,” he said. “That will get us started for the next season.”

He said the state has not released a price per ton yet. The cost is expected to be announced in the coming months. Burkett mentioned that prices are on the rise.
