Youngstown police officer involved in fatal shooting won’t face indictment
YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury has declined to indict the Youngstown police officer who shot and killed Mathue A. O’Malley, 27, June 13 on South Maryland Avenue.
At the time of the shooting, Youngstown police said a Youngstown police officer and O’Malley exchanged gunfire in the 100 block of the street.
O’Malley was injured in the exchange and died later that day at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. No officers were injured in the episode, Youngstown police stated in a news release.
Officers were dispatched to the home for a disturbance call. When the first officer arrived, the officer “was immediately met with gunfire from a male inside the house,” the release states.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the news release states.
The Youngstown Police Department Internal Affairs division also was conducting an internal investigation, which “reviews departmental policy,” the release stated. “Officer(s) involved were placed on administrative leave pursuant departmental policy,” the release added.
According to O’Malley’s obituary, he was born in Youngstown, was the father of one daughter and was a 2023 graduate of the New Castle School of Trades.
He was owner of Flying Eagle, a carpentry and construction company, working in low-income housing remodeling and demolition. He also was a part-time mechanic.
