Liberty school board selects new treasurer

LIBERTY — Liberty Local Schools has a new treasurer.

The Liberty Board of Education at its meeting Monday approved granting Amber Shaeffer a one-year administrative contract starting at the beginning of the year. Shaeffer comes from Child & Adolescent Behavioral Health (C&A) in Canton, a nonprofit full-service, trauma-informed mental health organization specializing in the emotional and behavioral needs of youth and their families, where she served as its chief financial officer.

The Dellroy resident holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Kent State University and an MBA from Morehead State University in Kentucky.

In addition to working as C&A’s chief financial officer, she previously worked for Summit Academy Management as its treasurer from 2016 to 2020, where she was responsible for reporting to its 24 school boards and its management board. Shaeffer received Auditor of State awards for clean audits for all of its schools in 2017 and 2018’s fiscal years during that time.

Board President David Malone said Stacy Foster, who has served as interim treasurer for the district since August, will stay in the position until Shaeffer reobtains her Ohio School Treasurers License, which expired this year.

Shaeffer’s current contract will keep her with the school district until July 31, 2025, after which they’ll talk about bringing her on as their actual treasurer, Malone said.

Malone welcomed Shaeffer to the district.

“We are very excited to move forward with you; not a lot of people out there (are) qualified or wanting to be a school treasurer,” Malone told Schaffer. “So we felt very fortunate that we were able to cross paths with you and bring you on board. We think you’ll make a wonderful addition to our team here and work very well with Stacy and (Superintendent) Brian.”

Superintendent Brian Knight expressed his gratitude to the board for doing their due diligence with their search to replace Maureen Lloyd, who served as their treasurer for six years until she joined Girard City Schools on a two-year contract Aug. 28.

“I am very thankful to our Board and the time they put in to select a candidate. They made a great hire in Amber. She has an extensive background in finance but what stands out to me is the compassion she brings for our students, staff and community,” Knight said. “The Liberty School District continues to head in the right direction and it’s very clear that Amber will assist us in executing our goals to the fullest.”

Shaeffer did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
