Girard officers on paid leave during probe
GIRARD — City police confirmed two officers are on paid administrative leave while they determine if they performed an unlawful entry and search.
According to the incident report, the officers, Mark Crain and James Cerenelli Jr, were advised of a report regarding potential domestic violence while at the station Sept. 7. The officers, along with two from Liberty’s department, responded to the call at 535 Powers Ave. at 9:18 p.m. Crain knocked on the door of Zachary Jones’s home, who he saw get up and turn off the lights in the room, according to the report.
The report states Crain gave “repeated and loud commands” to open the door, which Jones acknowledged and ignored.
Crain then kicked in the house’s front door, ordering him out of the house at gunpoint. Cerenelli handcuffed Jones and he was placed into the patrol car, where he was then transported to the Girard Police Department for booking and fingerprinting, according to the report.
In a supplemental document to Cerenelli’s report, Crain noted Jones was known to have a firearm at least two years prior. Crain added Jones has an active concealed carry license.
According to the report, Crain seized a handgun found in a shoebox in Jones’s bedroom, a small .380 Taurus pistol with seven unspent rounds.
Jones filed a complaint, alleging his 4th amendment rights were violated through what he considered an unlawful search without a warrant at his house. He also filed a complaint with police due to wrist injuries.
Jones was found guilty Oct. 10 on assault and disorderly conduct charges. He was sentenced to 60 days of house arrest and ordered to pay fines and court costs. He is also to be assessed for anger management and mental health, as well as drug and alcohol abuse, according to the Girard Municipal Court’s documentation.
Crain and Cerenelli will remain on paid leave until the internal investigation is complete.
