Women falsely accused of using fake IDs
BOARDMAN — Two women from out of state had their driver’s licenses damaged while having dinner recently at a local steakhouse.
According to a report from Boardman Police Department, the New Jersey natives told police their server took their ID cards then returned to the table with the card visibly damaged, and refused to serve them because she said the IDs were fakes.
The report, dated Saturday, states police then spoke with one of the store’s managers who said she bent the ID cards to check their authenticity.
The manager told police that bending ID cards is the store’s policy and she referred to a book that instructs managers and employees about how to recognize a fake ID before deciding to refuse service to the women.
The manager added that she had taken a two-day course on the subject and her understanding led her to believe the IDs were fraudulent.
The report states the manager told police that when a legitimate ID card is bent slightly, it should return almost completely to its normal form. She told police she was able to bend them in half as easily as a piece of paper. Police observed the ID cards to be bent nearly in half.
The report states the Boardman Police Department was able to run the women’s driver’s licenses and found them both to be valid. They told the manager to reconsider the store’s policy of bending ID cards to check authenticity.
The women stated that they did not wish to pursue charges but they were concerned about being able to pass through a TSA checkpoint at the airport on their return trip to New Jersey.
Police provided them with documentation.
Texas Roadhouse’s corporate office replied to an email inquiry by stating “we will investigate this internally.”
