Suspects in postal worker shooting death arraigned
YOUNGSTOWN — Two men charged in the shooting death of a postal worker in Warren appeared in a federal courtroom Friday for their arraignment.
Kaprice Sledge, 24, of Warren, and Thomas Sledge, 44, of Youngstown, were arraigned Friday in U.S. Northern District Court, charged with the murder of Jont’e Davis, 33, on March 2. Both men remain in detention pending a Dec. 9 trial date before Judge Donald C. Nugent, with a pretrial conference set for Nov. 15, court records show.
An indictment unsealed Thursday alleges that on March 2, the Sledges used a firearm to kill Davis while he was on duty as a U.S. Postal Service employee near Washington Street and Olive Avenue NE in Warren.
They each face charges of murder of a federal employee and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. If convicted, both could receive life in prison.
The case is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service with assistance from Warren police, the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force, and other agencies.
According to a Warren police report from the March 2 murder, Davis was found at 1:44 p.m. after city police officers responded to a call of shots fired. Davis was found inside his U.S. postal van and was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Officers and EMTs performed live-saving measures on scene before Davis was transported to Trumbull Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his wounds, the report states. According to witnesses, residents in the area said they heard several gunshots and saw a man on the ground. One of them called 911. It was the first homicide of the year in Warren.
A few hours later, the suspect vehicle was found in the driveway of 429 Maryland Ave. NE. The Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team served a search warrant and evidence, which included the vehicle, was recovered.
According to police, several individuals were transported to the Warren Police Department and interviewed, but no one was arrested at that time. Police did say at the time that the victim and the suspect or suspects knew each other.
