Speeding will be focus of deputies in Canfield Township

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — Chief Deputy Jeff Allen from the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office gave trustees an update at their Tuesday meeting, saying accidents are up, but car break-ins are down.

With the break-ins down, Allen’s deputies can focus more on speeding in the township.

“We are trying to keep up on speed complaints,” Allen said. “(Recently) we’ve spent time on McCarty.”

Trustee Marie Cartwright asked about watching the speed on Summit Drive. Allen said the early morning is when the complaints seem to be heaviest regarding speeding vehicles. He said he has deputies set up on the street and will continue to do so.

Cartwright said Langston Run is going to be the next street with speeding issues. Allen told trustees to just email the streets that are problems and he would check into it.

Trustee Joe Paloski asked Allen if he could use a drone to monitor traffic, but he said not to do speed radar.

While on the subject of drones, Allen said there is a grant he heard about that will provide for drones or Flock cameras. He said the Flock cameras have an annual fee per camera of more than $2,500. Four cameras would cost more than $10,000 a year to use.

“I would go for the drone,” Allen said. “They can be very useful.”

He said more information on the grant will be known Nov. 1.
