Shell casings found after Saturday gunfire on South Side
YOUNGSTOWN — Officers saw a “trail of spent casings” on East Florida Avenue heading east toward Shirley Road Saturday night when they responded to the South Side for gunfire.
Neighbors said they heard gunshots and cars speeding away. Officers then saw that several homes had been hit by the gunfire. Officers knocked on doors and determined that three homes were struck by bullets, but all of the residents were accounted for.
One of the residents said one of the four bullets that hit the house penetrated through a wall and lodged in a spare-bedroom wall.
At one home, bullets hit a car in the driveway. Another home was hit multiple times. Surveillance video showed a black truck with an open bed and gray SUV approaching the home and circling the block three times before opening fire. It appears that shooters were firing from the bed of the truck, the report states.
A home on Shirley Road also was struck by gunfire, and another surveillance video showed a black truck and gray SUV and gunfire coming from the vehicles.
There were spent bullet casings of three kinds found at the scene.
“Due to the quantity of spent casings, an exact number could not be adequately summed up,” the report states.
