Man dies in North Side homicide early Thursday
YOUNGSTOWN — A man was found shot at 1:31 a.m. Thursday inside a vehicle in the 400 block of Norwood Avenue on the North Side. He had been shot multiple times, and police consider his death to be a homicide.
Officers removed the man, 62, from the vehicle and performed life saving measures, but he died, according to a Youngstown police press release.
Police are investigating. Investigators found multiple bullet shell casings outside of the vehicle and other pieces of evidence that will be processed, the release states.
No other information is being released, including the victim’s name, the release states.
Thursday’s homicide is No. 19 for the year in the city.
The last homicide was the Sept. 10 shooting death by Youngstown police of Shane Linderman, 50, at a Dollar General store, 1370 Belmont Ave.
In that matter, officers responded to a report of a man stabbing himself and a woman inside the store. During an encounter with Linderman, an officer shot his gun, killing Linderman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Youngstown police press release.
Two Youngstown police officers were placed on paid administrative leave per policy, Lt. Brian Butler, the department’s staff inspector and head of the internal affairs division, said at the time. Only one officer discharged his or her firearm, Butler said. Neither of the victims worked at the store, Butler said.
Steve Irwin, press secretary for Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, said the office’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested by Youngstown police to investigate the shooting, and the agency was carrying out an investigation. He said no officers were injured, and the investigation is “active and ongoing.”
The Youngstown police Internal Affairs Division also was carrying out an investigation, police said in September.
