Coroner identifies 4 who died in explosion

ELLSWORTH — The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office has released the identities of the four people who died in an Oct. 5 morning explosion on Huxley Road.

They are Jeffrey Kocanyar, 69; Joann Kocanyar, 67; Julie Lubic, 33, and Adam Lubic, 33. Online real estate records and comments from neighbors indicate that Jeffrey and Joann Kocanyar were the owners of the home where the explosion occurred.

The coroner’s news release states that the coroner’s office was notified at 7:40 a.m. Saturday of multiple fatalities as a result of a home explosion.

Autopsies were conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the deaths and explosion remain under investigation by the coroner’s office and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office, the release states.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office said on Monday in a news release that its Fire & Explosion Investigations Bureau was leading the investigation, and officials were still working to identify the four people who were killed.

The release stated that fire investigators “will not make any determination as to what caused the fire and explosion until all evidence is collected and medical examiners have fully identified all of the victims.”

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has not provided any updates since then, and the Ellsworth Township Fire Department referred questions about the cause of the explosion to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Neighbors said a company had been carrying out home improvements on the house, and a large amount of insulation and other products were being stored on the driveway of the home.

A GoFundMe account was opened to help the Kocanyar family, including Jeffrey and Joann’s son, Jake, and daughter, Jill. It says Julie Lubic was also their daughter, and Adam Lubic was their son-in-law.

Neighbors told The Vindicator they were devastated by the loss of Jeffrey and Joann and stunned by the sudden explosion that brought devastation to the Kocanyars’ home and property and serious damage to homes nearby.

“The human side is the hardest part, because you see the family pictures and things like that on the ground, and it just rips your heart apart,” said Tracey Beardsley, whose house is directly across the street from the Kocanyar’s home.

The Rulli Brothers Facebook page earlier this week posted remarks about the death of the Kocanyars. “Jo Jo” Kocanyar worked there for more than 20 years, the post stated. “We are heartbroken at the loss of a Rulli Brothers family member, Jo Jo Kocanyar, after a terrible accident,” it stated.

Kala Christy, whose house is next door to the Kocanyar home, said she, her husband and son were “very close” with the Kocanyars.

“My son was like their grandkid. We were with them every day. They were over here when we were working in our back garage, or we were over there when he was working on his race bikes,” she said of Jeffrey, who raced motorcycles.

The explosion damaged windows in the front of Beardsley’s home, and the Christy home was moved from its foundation, Kala Christy said, showing how two courses of block on their garage no longer line up on top of each other.

Starting at $3.23/week.
