Campbell prohibits planting on devil strip

CAMPBELL — City officials have adopted an ordinance to prohibit residents from planting any type of foliage or vegetation on their devil strips.

The city has fielded a few complaints from residents who contend their neighbors’ vegetation close to the road obstructs their view and can present a potential hazard, such as when they’re backing out of their driveways, city council President George Levendis said after Wednesday’s regular council meeting.

A Tenney Avenue home has a series of sunflowers on its strip, making it difficult for neighbors pulling out of their driveways to see beyond them, Levendis added.

Specifically, the ordinance bans planting flowers, vegetables, plants, shrubs, trees, herbs and any kind of crops in those areas.

Levendis said that even though it’s not a major problem, “We want to put a stop to it” before it becomes a larger issue and generates additional complaints.

“We’re just trying to get ahead of it,” he added.

Nevertheless, the ordinance does not contain any penalties or sanctions for violations.

Also at the session, council members adopted a series of resolutions to allow the sale of seven vacant parcels throughout the city — some for as low as $1 or $2.

Many of the properties are on Tenney Avenue, with one each on Struthers-Liberty Road, Reed Avenue, Piccadilly Street and Courtland Avenue.

The move will simultaneously provide the opportunity for residents who live adjacent to the properties to pay taxes to the city on the parcels while lessening the burden on the street department to maintain them via mowing the grass and other means, he noted.

Starting at $3.23/week.
