Woman charged with assaulting boyfriend, threatening police

BOARDMAN — A woman is in jail after allegedly admitting to assaulting her longtime live-in partner.

Earla Anne Cheek, 45, of Boardman Manor trailer park on South Avenue, was arrested Sunday night at her home and will appear this morning in Mahoning County Boardman Court to face misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and threats of domestic violence, and felony counts of intimidation and retaliation against police.

The police report states Cheek was intoxicated and was combative with police immediately upon their arrival, despite having called them herself to report that she had been hurt when her boyfriend kicked open the screen door of their trailer.

The boyfriend, whom she said was also drunk, had run off and was not located while police were at the scene.

The report states Cheek told police she was angry at the man because her small dog had gotten loose in the area and she had to spend several hours looking for it and he was not home to help her. She said she found the dog, but was still angry when her boyfriend came home about 10 p.m. and a verbal argument began.

The report states she told police the argument turned physical when she tackled the man in their front yard. They wrestled for about five minutes, she said, before getting up and swearing at each other before he retreated to the trailer and she sat on the porch to smoke a cigarette.

She told police that, shortly thereafter, he kicked open the screen door as he exited the trailer, and it swung all the way open and hit her as she was sitting, cutting her lip.

Police determined Cheek was responsible and arrested her, but not without incident.

The report states they had difficulty getting handcuffs on her, and when they tried to force her hands behind her back she told one officer: “I’m going to hurt you.”

During the ride to Mahoning County jail, Cheek allegedly admitted to using crack cocaine earlier in the week and to drinking daily. She also told police officers that when she gets out of jail “someone will be putting a bullet in your heads.” She added: “This is why cops die and you all deserve it.”

The report states that Cheek took custody of a cousin’s three young children from Pennsylvania last month because the cousin is unable to care for them. Police called Cheek’s mother to come care for the children, and a report of the incident will be submitted to Mahoning County Children’s Services. Police reported that all the children appeared to be safe and healthy.
