Two people shot Tuesday night on South Side

YOUNGSTOWN — Two people were shot in the first block of Brooklyn Avenue on the city’s South Side on Tuesday night and were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital but are expected to be OK.

A Youngstown police report states that the shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. Police were initially called to the location for a ShotSpotter notification, which notifies the Youngstown Police Department of gunfire on the South Side. Officers were later told that someone had been shot.

Detectives and crime scene investigators responded and carried out an investigation. Multiple spent bullet shell casings were found on Brooklyn Avenue near where a vehicle was found. The vehicle was towed from the scene for investigative purposes.

While officers were at the scene, Damon L. Huff, 36, and another walked under the yellow crime scene tape and began walking directly through the crime scene, the report states.

Officers ordered the men to immediately turn around and leave the yellow tape.

But Huff did not comply despite officers telling him they would speak to him on the other side of the crime tape.

He was warned he would be arrested, but still persisted and was placed in handcuffs and placed in the back of a police cruiser.

He was later taken to the Mahoning County jail and charged with misconduct at an emergency, a low-level misdemeanor.

He was arraigned Wednesday in Youngstown Municipal Court and was also released from the Mahoning County jail Wednesday.
