Boy, 12, killed in 2023 accident that injured 3
YOUNGSTOWN — The U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Brandon T. Kennedy, 31, of Lakeview Avenue, Tuesday on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault in a Nov. 17, 2023, crash at Alameda and Juanita avenues on the North Side.
Kennedy’s charges are on file in Youngstown Municipal Court, but he does not yet have an arraignment date on the two felony charges, according to court records. If convicted, Kennedy could get more than eight years in prison.
Kennedy also faces misdemeanor charges of operation in a willful wanton disregard of the safety of persons or property and driving under suspension, according to court records.
The 9:21 a.m. crash killed a 12-year-old boy and injured three other people, according to Vindicator files.
The Youngstown Police Department issued an arrest warrant for Kennedy on Monday, and officers with the task force initiated a search for him, according to the task force press release. Kennedy was arrested Tuesday morning at a home in the first block of Broadview Avenue in Girard, the release states.
The crash occurred after Kennedy drove a 2023 Dodge Charger at high speed and failed to stop at a stop sign in a residential area, according to the task force release and a Youngstown Police Department crash report. Kennedy’s vehicle struck another car as it passed through the intersection.
Ja’Vonie M. LaBooth, 12, of Alameda Avenue, a passenger in Kennedy’s vehicle, was killed, according to the Youngstown police report. Ja’Vonie attended Rayen Early College Middle School and previously attended Harding Elementary School, where he was recognized as an honor roll and star academic scholar, according to his obituary.
Jakahira LaBooth, 13, of Alameda Avenue, another passenger in Kennedy’s vehicle, suffered suspected serious injuries, the report states. Kennedy disobeyed a stop sign entering the intersection, striking a northbound vehicle on Juanita crossing Alameda, the police report states.
Kennedy suffered suspected serious injuries in the crash, as did the driver of the other vehicle, Eric M. Pruitt, 29, of Juanita Avenue.
“Tragically, a 12-year-old was an innocent victim in this horrific incident,” said Pete Elliott, U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Ohio. “The first step in the pursuit of justice for that child occurred today when our task force took this fugitive into custody.”
