Ex-Austintown man gets five years in prison

Abraham Riley, 39, sentenced for gross sexual imposition

YOUNGSTOWN — Abraham T. Riley, 39, formerly of Austintown, was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to two counts of gross sexual imposition in a criminal case that started out as six counts of rape that each could have produced a life prison sentence.

Riley, whose most recent address is in Tower City, Pa., was accused of raping a child between 2015 and 2017 and committing gross sexual imposition against the child between 2013 and 2020.

The five-year sentence was recommended jointly by the prosecution and defense, and Riley must now register as a tier-II sex offender, meaning he must register every 180 days for 25 years after he leaves prison.

Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court handed down the sentence.

Caitlyn Andrews, county assistant prosecutor, said she thinks the resolution is “fair,” mostly because “this was the wish of the victim to handle it in this manner.”

The child then offered remarks to the judge, saying, “It took nearly 10 years to finally stand here today and get justice for the pain and suffering the defendant, Abraham Riley, has put onto me.”

The victim said she or he “was diagnosed with severe depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder, which I have to take several medications for.” She said she has nightmares.

“So I stand here today happy this case finally came to an end and I received justice because from the second I spoke about Abraham sexually assaulting me and raping me, I was petrified of going through with this and his threats to kill me and my loved ones.”

She said, “After today, Abraham has no control over my life or my family’s and I am happy to finally be free.”

Abraham did not make a statement before sentencing.
