YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown man has been indicted on a charge of murder by a Mahoning County grand jury following his July 9 arrest during an investigation into an argument with his girlfriend on Berkeley Avenue, authorities said.
The Youngstown Police Department reported that officers at the scene were aware that Samuel X. Perez, 22, was a suspect in a recent homicide. After confirming the information with the detective working the case, officers detained Perez and searched him.
During the search, officers found a bag containing a white powder, identified as cocaine, in Perez's pants pocket. A large amount of marijuana also was discovered in his backpack,, the police report states.
Initially, Perez was charged with felony cocaine possession. However, after what police described as a "thorough interrogation, review of all evidence, and consultation with" the Youngstown Prosecutor's Office, Perez was arrested on a murder charge in connection with the death of 22-year-old Angel Sostre.
Perez was arraigned on Wednesday on the cocaine possession charge, with a preliminary hearing set for the same day, according to court records.
The murder charge stems from a call on June 18, when police responded around 5:45 a.m. regarding a dead man with gunshot wounds behind a row of apartments in the 600 block of McBride Street on the East Side.
The victim was identified as Sostre, according to an earlier police press release.
