BOARDMAN — Charges are pending against a driver accused of stealing a vehicle from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on Sunday afternoon and leading police from several agencies on a chase that resulted in an Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser being damaged in a crash.

A news release from the State Patrol’s Canfield post states it was contacted around 3 p.m. Sunday by the Cleveland Police Department to assist in locating a Ford Expedition that was stolen from the airport and tracked via GPS to the Ohio Turnpike, where it was located by patrol troopers.

The SUV exited the turnpike and fled from troopers and the Boardman Police Department, the release states.

At 3:41 p.m., the Ford Expedition struck a cruiser driven by Sgt. Kristopher Conaway of the Canfield post, but he was not injured. Three minutes later, trooper John Meluch, who was driving a marked Dodge Charger patrol vehicle, slowed / stopped prior to attempting to cross South Avenue when a northbound Nissan Frontier entered his path. The cruiser struck the driver’s side of the Nissan, driven by Daniel Kinsman, causing the Nissan to rotate and overturn onto its roof, the release states.

Both occupants of the Nissan, including the unbelted passenger, Kristen Kinsman, sustained minor injuries and were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment. The Dodge Charger stopped immediately after impact and Meluch, who was wearing his seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was taken to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.

The fleeing Ford Expedition continued into Pennsylvania on Interstate 76 with troopers in pursuit. The SUV’s driver was arrested by police several miles into Pennsylvania, the report states.
