NTSB releases report on fatal plane crash in Valley
VIENNA — The National Transportation Safety Board on Wednesday released its preliminary report on a plane crash July 22 near the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport that killed two adults and a juvenile.
The report states the airplane was higher than normal when beginning the approach.
The report indicates “as the airplane proceeded down the runway, it descended toward the runway; however, it did not touch down. At the end of Runway 32, the airplane pitched up rapidly to the left and began to ‘flip.’ The airplane then descended below his field of view and crashed.”
The pilot and two passengers were killed when the twin-engine engine plane crashed near the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. Killed were Jawdat Khawam, 54; Martine Arseneault, 45; and Daphne Khawam, 8, all from Laval, Quebec, near Montreal.
Their flight left Plattsburgh International Airport in Plattsburgh, New York, at 4:51 p.m. July 22 and headed for John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Columbus.
The report states the airplane climbed to 16,500 feet and approximately 50 miles outside of Youngstown the pilot reported he lost his left engine power and couldn’t maintain altitude.
The report states the pilot was offered information on closer airports, but the pilot requested Youngstown for the longer runway.
Khawam operated the airplane and possessed Canadian and U.S. Federal Aviation Administration private pilot certificates with airplane single-engine land and airplane multiengine land ratings.
