Man shot fatally on I-680 identified
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office has identified the man found shot to death in a car on Interstate 680 Tuesday afternoon in Youngstown.
The coroner’s office issued a news release Thursday confirming the identity as 20-year-old Christian Moretti. The release also states that the office was notified at 4:41 p.m. Tuesday of Moretti’s death.
An autopsy was conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the matter remains under investigation by the Youngstown Police Department and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office, according to the release.
Youngstown police have said Moretti was targeted.
A Youngstown police report states that police were notified at 4:13 p.m. of the shooting near northbound exit 4A, which is the U.S. Route 422 / state Route 193 exit.
When an officer arrived at the scene, he found a white man in the vehicle who was deceased with apparent gunshot wounds, the report states. Detectives, crime scene investigators and the coroner’s office took over the scene.
I-680 north was shut down between South Avenue and state Route 193 while police were investigating.
If it is ruled a homicide, it will be the 16th of the year in the city. It will be No. 17 if the June 13 officer involved killing of Mathue O’Malley, 27, in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue, is counted as a homicide.
The city had 22 homicides in 2023.
Moretti had an address on Youngstown’s East Side when he was charged with a minor traffic offense a year ago in the Youngstown-Austintown area.
