Man charged in connection with Aug. 4 chase

BOARDMAN — The Ohio State Highway Patrol has released the identity of the man who led them on an interstate chase that involved a trooper crashing into another vehicle.

A news release states that Makele Scruggs, 23, of Cleveland, is charged with failure to comply (a third-degree felony), unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (a fourth-degree felony), and felonious assault (a second-degree felony). Scruggs may also face additional charges from the Pennsylvania State Police.

The Aug. 4 chase began when Scruggs allegedly stole a vehicle from Cleveland Hopkins Airport and led troopers on a chase — mostly along the Ohio Turnpike — that went through Boardman and ended with his arrest in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

At about 3 p.m. that day, OHP says Scruggs took a Ford Expedition that was tracked by GPS and located by troopers on the turnpike. During the chase, Scruggs allegedly struck a n OHP cruiser driven by a trooper attempting to stop him.

During the Boardman portion of the chase, during which Scruggs led law enforcement down U.S. Route 224, one trooper’s vehicle crashed into another vehicle at South Avenue.

The news release from that day states that a Nissan SUV was heading north and as it started to cross 224, it entered the path of the OHP cruiser, and was struck on the driver’s side, causing the SUV to roll over onto its roof. The occupants sustained some injuries and were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. The trooper sustained minor injuries and was treated at the St. Elizabeth Boardman campus.
