Building with cans helps feed Second Harvest Food Bank

NILES — A rocketship, an ear of corn, a hamburger with ketchup and mustard, and an ice cream cone with two scoops of ice cream were among the colorful creations made of food cans for the CanStruction design and build competition Friday at the Eastwood Mall food court concourse.

Seven teams of up to five members gathered Friday and worked to build unique creations from cans of food that coincided with the theme “Summer Bites: Building Joy One Can at a Time.” Teams were given 12 hours to build their can creations, but no one needed that long, with some teams finishing before noon.

The cans, which were purchased by the team members, will be given to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

Renee Fuller, director of development for Second Harvest Food Bank, said the teams could use any type and size of food can and boxes to build whatever they wanted.

The completed structures were scheduled to be judged today and will be displayed through Labor Day. The public can also vote for a People’s Choice winner.

Fuller said the marketing team from the Cafaro Company, which owns and operates the Eastwood Mall, contacted her about the idea of a CanStruction event.

“There will be between 3,000 and 5,000 cans used,” Fuller said.

Teams included Boak and Sons, Pizza Joe’s, Senior Care Insurance, Second Harvest Food Bank, Oh WOW!, Dan Haggerty and Team, and the Cafaro Company.

Some of the creations included a large s’more, a slice of pizza, and an apple with a heart shape inside. Dominic Marrari with Senior Care Insurance in Warren said his team was building a large ear of corn with 500 yellow-and green-colored cans.

“This is a great way to be creative and give back to the community. It was a fun thing to do and helps a lot of people,” Marrari said.

He said he remembers going to the store with his grandmother and getting cans of soup at five for $1.

Bayann Jadallah of the Cafaro Company said her team was making an ice cream cone with two ice cream scoops and a cherry on top. She said the cherry was made of cherry pop cans.

Kelci Holovatyk of Poland, project manager/ estimator with Boak and Sons of Austinown, said she was making a large hamburger with red cans for ketchup and yellow cans for mustard. There were also different colored cans for the meat, bread and lettuce.

“We were thinking of what food items people could need in their household and also make a hamburger,” she said.

Jessica Seminara-Tomczyk, COO with Pizza Joe’s of New Castle, Pa., said the team was making a large slice of pizza with crust, cheese and sauce.

Fuller said the Second Harvest team was making the Second Harvest Food Bank’s logo of an apple with a heart inside it.

Mike Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest, said the agency appreciates the support it is receiving from the teams.

“I think this is a great event. It is all about helping those in need. They showcase what they have created while helping families get food,” Iberis said.
