Boardman school board loses member

BOARDMAN — Applicants are being sought to fill the unexpired term of a Boardman Board of Education member following an Aug. 6 resignation.

According to a news release from the Boardman Local School District, Frank Zetts, who has been on the board since his November 2015 election, said his reasons for leaving were personal, including the recent death of his mother.

In his handwritten resignation letter, Zetts stated he was doing so “along with other issues that would affect my duties and challenges that this position requires.”

Zetts could not be reached for comment.

On March 2, Zetts was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 in Austintown and was pulled over by an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer. His blood alcohol level was 0.125, according to court records. The legal limit for driving in Ohio is 0.08.

He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired, no driver’s license and driving in marked lanes, according to court records. As part of a plea deal, Zetts was fined $650 and court costs.

He was sentenced to 30 days in jail with 27 suspended, a 12-month license suspension with limited driving privileges and ordered to attend a Driver Intervention Program

Board President John Fryda stated in the release that the resignation announcement comes just before the beginning of a new school year.

“We are determined to find a replacement who will be dedicated to the success of the district and our obligations to the Boardman community,” Fryda said.

Zetts’ replacement must be named within 30 days of his resignation, according to Ohio law.

His successor will serve until Dec. 31, 2025. If the appointed member wants to continue serving, they have to run in the 2025 general election to complete the rest of Zetts’ unexpired term.

The release states board members will review applications and may decide on a replacement as early as the next regular meeting, which will be 6:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Boardman High School.
