Youngstown man arrested on gun-related charge

YOUNGSTOWN — A man already facing a charge of domestic violence was arrested Wednesday on a gun-related charge stemming from a traffic stop, according to a Youngstown police report.

Travail Miller, 24, of Youngstown, faces a charge of improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, as well a charge of tampering with evidence.

The report states the driver of the vehicle attempted to throw the weapon out of the car while police tried to stop the vehicle.

The report states when police tried to stop a vehicle after it ran a stop sign on East High Street, the driver was seen “leaning and moving quickly throughout the driver and passenger compartments of the vehicle.” The vehicle at one point drove close to a wooded area, where police reported they saw the driver toss something out of the window, the report states.

Police found a .22-caliber handgun in the spot shortly after detaining the driver and a passenger, the report states.

The passenger, a woman, told police the driver, a man, began to “freak out” when police pulled up behind them, and he tried to hand the gun to her, telling her to throw it out her window. She told police the man also told her not to tell them anything, and the report states that during the arrest the man repeatedly yelled over at the woman, trying to give her instruction about what to say.

The report states Miller has a pending domestic violence case from May, and under Ohio law is not permitted to possess any firearms.

The domestic violence charge stemmed from a May 28 incident at a home on McGuffey Road.

According to that report, a man told a woman he was with to give him her phone and password. When she refused, he grabbed and swung her around, causing her to smash her face into a brick wall. He also slapped her several times before leaving, the report states.

The report states the man assaulted the woman again later in the day. When police arrived at the McGuffey Road home, they found the man in a bedroom and arrested him, according to the report.

The report states on May 31, after being released from jail, the man made a video and sent the woman a message through Cash App, threatening her life.
