Woman arraigned on aggravated arson charge

YOUNGSTOWN — Marlyne Celestin, 34, was arraigned Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court on a charge of aggravated arson in connection to a fire Friday at 3656 Neilson Avenue on the South Side.

Celestin, who is scheduled to return to court 9 a.m. July 22, could receive about eight years in prison if convicted.

Police were sent to a house fire with the Youngstown Fire Department already there, according to a police report. Officers spoke to a man who said a woman set his house on fire, the report states. He said he was headed to work in the morning and called his supervisor to let him know he did not feel safe leaving his home, and his supervisor gave him the day off.

When the man returned home, the house was on fire. He said the woman set the couch on fire Thursday night and that officers were sent to the house twice that night, according to the report.

The man said the woman had been living with him for a couple of months after meeting her in Columbus. He told police she threatened to kill him and she had been drinking since 6 p.m. Thursday, the report states.

A neighbor told police he or she heard the woman threaten to kill the resident of the burning house, the report states.

Officers spoke to the woman and found her to be heavily intoxicated and had multiple contusions and scrapes as well as a split upper lip, the report states. She refused medical treatment, would not talk to officers and walked away.

Officers determined she was unable to care for herself. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and sent for a mental health evaluation, the report states.

In the process of the woman being registered at the hospital, she told an officer, “I did it and I’m going to light his ass on fire,” the report states. The remark was captured on the body worn camera of a Mercy Health police officer, the report states.
