Joyce named to House task force probing Trump assassination attempt
U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce, whose district includes Trumbull County, is among the seven Republicans named to a 13-member House of Representatives task force that will investigate the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
“I am honored Speaker (Mike) Johnson selected me to serve on the bipartisan House task force on the attempted assassination of President Trump,” said Joyce, R-Bainbridge. “As a prosecutor of over 25 years (in Geauga County) and former chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, I will work diligently to uncover the facts, demand accountability and ensure these security failures are prevented from happening in the future.”
A sniper shot Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee and a former president, in the ear during a July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pa. Corey Comperatore, who attended the rally, was killed by the gunman and two others were injured. The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by a Secret Service countersniper.
The committee consists of seven Republicans and six Democrats with U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, a Republican who lives in Butler, serving as chairman.
The U.S. House last week voted 416-0 to create the task force to determine what went wrong July 13 — the day of the attempted assassination — to ensure accountability and prevent such a security failure from happening again, Joyce said.
Kimberly Cheatle, Secret Service director, resigned last week after testifying in front of a House committee about the attempted assassination.
The task force will make recommendations for reform to the relevant government agencies and recommend any necessary legislation to implement the reforms. It will have control and jurisdiction over all pending House committee investigations regarding the assassination attempt and will have subpoena authority, Joyce said.
The task force will issue a final report no later than Dec. 13 and can issue interim reports before that if necessary.
