Hubbard trustees remove renewal levy from ballot

HUBBARD — A renewal levy will be taken off the November ballot.

One of two 1.75-mill police levies will be taken off the ballot, according to township trustee Rick Hernandez. The levy that is being removed was passed in 2001 and generated nearly $163,000 annually, he said.

He said he feels secure enough to let go of one of the levies “due to the status of our police fund and due to the fact we were able to carry a lot of money over for next year.”

“We felt the people, they’re burdened with a lot of tax,” Hernandez said. “Our hope is that we’ll be able to maintain operations right now without going back to the taxpayers. I think it’s something unique, taking a levy off. Usually you hear about people putting them on.”

Hernandez said taking this levy off the ballot will save township residents money on their property taxes. The motion was passed by all three trustees.

“They’ll only see one of two renewals,” he said.

Trustee Jason Tedrow said the levy that is being removed from the ballot could be sought again if needed in the future, and trustees have until 2026 to do so.

The levy that will be renewed is a 1.75-mill levy, which will appear on November’s ballot. This levy will generate $182,000 annually.
