Hubbard council pursues grant for park restrooms

HUBBARD — Mayor Ben Kyle and council members hope to receive money from an Ohio NatureWorks grant to make Waugh Park more handicap accessible.

Hubbard has applied for the yearly grant, which is provided through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for purposes of updating or developing outdoor areas, in hopes of building restroom facilities in Waugh Park.

“Currently, there are no current restrooms in place (at Waugh Park), and it is a very busy park,” Kyle said. “So we’re hoping to make this investment so there is a full ADA-compliant restroom in this neighborhood park.”

Kyle said he and city council are hoping to receive $43,000 from the grant, but the overall project will cost $75,000. Council will pay the remaining costs with money in their park and recreation fund.

Kyle said this is the only project for which they are seeking the grant but have received the grant in the past for other projects.

“We’ve received it twice before for playground equipment in Mattinett Park and Waugh Park, so we’re hoping to build upon that success to be able to bring an actual restroom facility to Waugh Park,” he said. “There was always a constant need for improvement (in these parks). This is the first time we’ve made an application for a restroom facility.”

He said this is a competitive grant.

Starting at $3.23/week.
