Grand jury opts for no indictment in shooting death
Staff report
WARREN — A Trumbull County grand jury has opted not to indict a Campbell woman who was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her boyfriend Jan. 4.
Kristen V. Schmidt, 30, was no-billed by the grand jury on Wednesday, according to a court report. She was accused of shooting Michael Cusick, of Girard, 33, in the stomach and chest area early Jan. 4 after telling police they had been fighting “all night” and he tried to break into their Dearborn Street home through a backdoor, according to a Girard police report at the time. She also told police there was a history of domestic violence between them.
Schmidt appeared in Girard Municipal Court in January, facing a single count of felonious assault in connection to Cusick’s shooting. She later was released on a $25,000 bond.
Cusick later died from his injuries, which elevated her charge to murder. However, the prosecutor’s office sought an indictment on the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter and dropped the felonious assault charge.
Upon questioning, Schmidt told police she had a 9 mm handgun in a lockbox in the home. She admitted shooting Cusick, the report stated.
Schmidt told Girard police there were others in the home who were friends of hers but they did not hear the fighting or the gunshot and they left prior to the police arriving.
At the time of her arrest, she was living with her father in Campbell.
