Boy, 15, in custody in fatal shooting in Niles

NILES — A 15-year-old is in custody following a fatal Fourth of July shooting that occurred after 11 p.m. Thursday.

City police responded to a 911 call at 311 High Ave. where they found a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head in the driveway, according to a social media post. A Trumbull County 911 dispatch call sheet identified the victim as Brandon Bork.

Niles Fire Department and Lane Medical personnel rendered aid to Bork, who was then transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he later died. City Police chief Jay Holland said the shooting followed an altercation at a party at the High Avenue residence.

“From my understanding, the victim was not an invitee to the party, and we’re looking into that, that may have been the cause of the ruckus,” Holland said.

Holland said the shooter walked down the street after the incident and encountered a resident to whom he claimed that he had “just killed somebody.” Holland said the teen then came back to the scene, where he confessed to officers that he committed the killing, according to a police report.

Facing a murder charge, the suspect, who has not been identified, is at the Trumbull County Juvenile Justice Center. The investigation is ongoing.

Holland said the shooting was an isolated incident and posed no danger to public safety.

He said investigators are seeking another witness who was at the house at the time of the incident but fled before police arrived.

Holland said city police have already presented a “pretty solid case” to the Trumbull County Juvenile Prosecutor’s office.

This is the second killing in the city in 2024. In January, K’vonn Lavell Watson, 29, of Warren, was found at 1556 Niles Cortland Road after the Niles 911 Center received a call around 3 a.m. from him saying he was stabbed, according to Tribune Chronicle archives.

The department said that Watson spoke to officers before being transported to St. Joseph Warren Hospital, where he later died.

Jalynda Owens, 26, was later arrested and charged with tampering with evidence and obstructing justice, both felonies, in connection with the death of Watson, according to Capt. John Marshall.

On Jan 23, Owens pleaded not guilty and waived a preliminary hearing to which Judge Christopher Shaker ordered the case bound over to the grand jury. However, the grand jury chose not to indict her on the charges, according to court records.
