AP honors Vindicator staff with 10 awards

The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle will receive 10 awards in this year’s statewide Associated Press Media Editors awards, the APME announced Tuesday.

The awards in actual order of finish — first, second and third places — along with the General Excellence, Hall of Fame, Rising Star and First Amendment winners, will be announced at an awards ceremony July 21 in Columbus.

More than 50 daily newspapers in Ohio submitted 1,418 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2023.

The competition recognizes outstanding print and broadcast journalism in Ohio. The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle compete in Division IV with other newspapers around the state, including the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram, The Canton Repository and The Lima News.

The sports department will take home three awards in this year’s contest, including those for the annual football preview special section, best daily sports section and best sports enterprise story for its story “Behind the Numbers: How Youngstown State uses analytics to gain an edge on opponents.”

The newspapers will take home two awards for best editorial writer, with copy editor Richard Logan and former editor Brenda Linert earning spots in the top three.

Business editor Ron Selak won an award as best business writer. Chief photographer R. Michael Semple won two awards, one for best news photo “Afternoon Standoff” and one for best photo story for a series of pictures from a skeet shooting tournament.

The newspapers also won as a staff for best headline writer for a collection of headlines and for best public service for coverage of the Youngstown City School District teachers strike last fall.

Ted Snyder, newspaper general manager, said, “We’re very pleased for our newsroom to be recognized again this year for their efforts in consistently providing award winning community journalism.”
