YOUNGSTOWN — Cecilia S. Mayfield, 30, of Woodcrest Avenue, was sentenced to 5 to 7.5 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty in April to two counts of felonious assault for an Oct. 10 incident in which she tried to hit people with her car on Ivanhoe Avenue on the South Side.
Prosecutors recommended that she get 8 to 12 years in prison, but Mayfield’s attorney, Rhys Cartwright-Jones argued for less, stating in a filing that it is a mitigating factor that Mayfield did not act “from malice or premeditation but from a visceral response to an immediate and life-threatening provocation.”
Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Mayfield.
Youngstown police were called to the 1300 block of Aberdeen Avenue on the South Side on Oct. 10 and heard gunfire one street over on Ivanhoe Avenue.
An officer saw a car being driven through a yard at Jean Street and Ivanhoe Avenue toward the officer and a male running after the vehicle. Mayfield got out of the car and told the officer she had been shot at. The male had blood spatter on his shirt sleeves, a report states. He was placed in handcuffs.
Mayfield and another woman then started to fight 10 feet from the officer. The officer pointed his stun gun at them and commanded them to stop fighting, which they did, the report states.
Neighbors watching the situation said Mayfield had been trying to hit people with her car. The male was released, and Mayfield was detained, the report states. Her car had damage to the front bumper. Police were told someone fired a gun at Mayfield’s vehicle while she was trying to run the man over, the report states.
Two bullet shell casings were found in a driveway on Ivanhoe Avenue, and Mayfield’s car had four bullet holes in it, a police report states.
