WARREN -- Trumbull County Commissioner Denny Malloy said this year's Washington D.C. Fly-In sponsored by the Youngstown / Warren Regional Chamber allowed him to speak with state and federal representatives about a variety of local issues.
Malloy said the Mahoning Valley sent 92 representatives, which was the second largest contingent.
"Only Dayton had a larger group," Malloy said at Friday's commissioners meeting.
He said the local delegation watched Mike Rulli's inauguration at the Capitol as 6th District congressman on Tuesday night.
"This is important because our district has changed over the years," Malloy said. "As a state senator, Rulli, who did not represent Trumbull County, was instrumental in helping us in Lordstown. He vowed to us that he will serve the people of Trumbull County and the Mahoning Valley. He has a familiarity with our county."
Malloy said the spotlight was shined on Northeast Ohio that day.
"We got a lot of ears listening to our concerns," he said. "There were people who had meetings at the White House. We had meetings at the Congressional Hall in the Library of Congress.
"I had face time, myself, with four different congressmen in regards to Mosquito Lake, Thomas Steel and the Vienna Air Base," Malloy said. "We got a lot of pledges and commitments."
They also met with staffers from Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown's office and Republican U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance's office.
"We're on the map," he continued. "We just need to follow up."
Also Friday, commissioners did not advance levies for several agencies, as discussed during this week's commissioners workshop. Trumbull County Children's Services, the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board and the Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities are all working to have 10-year renewal levies placed on the November ballot.
Commissioners discussed the levy proposals on Monday.
Malloy expects the levy renewal proposals to be on next week's commissioner agenda because of advice they received from the county prosecutor's office.
Commissioners also:
• Approved awarding Freedom Roofing, Windows & Siding LLC, of Woodville, Ohio, a $68,734 contract to do the roof on the Girard Multi-Generational Center Gym. Freedom Roofing's bid for the work was more than $20,000 less than the bids submitted by two local roofing companies.
• Increased the amount available for the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs by $11,436 for a total award of $167,436. This money will be used to help drivers deliver hot meals to Trumbull elderly residents and shut-ins. Once these funds are depleted, the meal delivery program sponsored by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs will end. The meal delivery service then will transition to other provider agencies.
• Approved the purchase of a $38,200 2024 Ford Ranger XL 4 X 4 Supercrew Cab vehicle for the county's building inspection department.
• Approved the retirement of 45-year county employee William "Bim" Turner, who recently served as the executive director of Workforce Development Board of Trumbull County.
• Honored Anthony "Tony" Cario, former chief operating officer of Direction Home of Eastern Ohio, who died April 9.
• The commissioners July 10 meeting will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Trumbull County FairGrounds, 899 Everett-Hull Road, in honor of the Trumbull County Fair.
