Newspapers get new ad director

.Angela Kellar

WARREN — The Tribune Chronicle and The Vindicator have hired a new director of retail advertising, a woman who’s served her customers well in her decades-long career in sales.

Angela Kellar succeeds Harry Newman, who retired in May after leading the department for nearly 10 years.

“We’re very excited to bring Angela on board to lead our advertising department. She has been a successful sales leader for most of her career and has an excellent knowledge of both of the markets our newspapers serve,” Ted Snyder, general manager for the newspapers, said.

“We wish Harry the best in his retirement. I’m pleased that Harry was able to finish his career with the Tribune Chronicle where it started in the 1970s,” Snyder said.

Kellar will lead all aspects of the advertising department, from print ads in the two newspapers, on the websites — www.tribtoday.com and www.vindy.com — and in special sections and magazines, as well as classified ads.

A 1989 graduate of Howland High School, Kellar, who now calls Warren home, began her career in Erie, Pa., as promotions director for country radio station WXTA 98. From there, she transitioned to local cable television ad sales in the Erie region before spending time in the late 1990s at a Youngstown-area television news station.

Kellar went on to open and run a successful Warren-based advertising firm for 20 years before going back to sales, including at Levin Furniture and most recently at Ashland-based Centerra Co-Op.

“I really enjoyed what I did there, the people were great, but this opportunity came up and I couldn’t pass” it up,” Kellar said of the retail ad director’s job.

Her focus at the newspapers will be on maintaining the value of print advertising while building value on the digital side. That will include a new Facebook page for The Vindicator in the near future to complement the Tribune Chronicle’s page, www.facebook.com/TribuneChronicle.

“I see a lot of opportunity. I want to take it to the next level with digital marketing,” through several options, from Google ads to ads on tribtoday.com and vindy.com, she said.

“We have a great sales staff, people who really know what they are doing, who have great relationships with the customers, so I feel like we just need to get in front of them and let them know these products are available,” she said.

Kellar has two adult children, two dachshunds and two rescue cats. Also, she’s in her 15th year as a youth soccer coach with TOP Soccer of the Mahoning Valley, a soccer organization dedicated to children and adults with special needs.
