Sentencing dates set for child killers

YOUNGSTOWN — The sentencing hearings for three men in the Sept. 21, 2020, killing of 4-year-old Rowan Sweeney are set for three consecutive weeks starting with Brandon Crump Jr. at 2 p.m. June 26.

The second sentencing is for Kimonie Bryant, 27, at 9:30 a.m. July 2; and the third is Andre McCoy Jr., 24, at 9:30 a.m. July 10.

Judge Anthony D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will preside over the three cases. He also presided over the jury trial in February for Crump, 21.

Crump and Bryant drove to a home on Perry Street to rob Yarnell Green Jr. of cash, prosecutors said. Bryant drove the car as Crump entered the house, shot all four adults inside and killed Rowan, then fled with cash, prosecutors said.

The third co-defendant, McCoy, was among the four adults who were shot in the house, but he was found to have been communicating by text message with Bryant to help facilitate the robbery, prosecutors said.

Crump was convicted at trial on all counts, including aggravated murder. Bryant and McCoy took pleas in the case.

A recent prosecution filing states that Bryant failed to live up to the terms of his plea agreement by lying, and prosecutors want to argue for a longer sentence as a result.

Mahoning County Prosecutor Gina DeGenova stated late last month that a sentencing postponement request by Bryant’s attorneys created a “domino effect” in pushing sentencing dates for Crump and McCoy.
