Police arrest Austintown stabbing suspect

AUSTINTOWN — Austintown police arrested a 22-year-old Warren man Tuesday in connection with a stabbing at a township apartment complex.

Mahoning County court records show Joseph D. Stevens is charged with one count each of felonious assault and strangulation — both felonies — and one count of domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor, related to a stabbing at Compass West Apartments on Thursday.

The report states that a man showed up at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital emergency room with stab wounds, and told police he was stabbed at the apartment complex.

Police then went to the complex to investigate and saw blood on the doorway at 1066 Compass West and followed a trail of blood to an apartment. The report also states that an officer reviewed security camera video, confirming the attack occurred there.

Police entered the apartment on the basis that someone inside could possibly be injured and found the apartment empty.

When police went to the hospital to speak with the victim’s girlfriend, they found a car with blood on the passenger seat and processed it for evidence, according to the report.

Police interviewed two witnesses at the hospital and again later at the police station, according to the report, but were unable to interview the victim because he was transported to the trauma unit at St. Elizabeth main campus in Youngstown.

The Vindicator could not determine the man’s condition Tuesday.

Court records show that Mahoning County Austintown Court Judge Scott Hunter issued a warrant for Stevens’ arrest on Thursday.
