Man suffers accidental self-inflicted gunshot injury

YOUNGSTOWN — A man accidentally shot himself in the stomach in the 300 block of Hilton Avenue on the South Side over the weekend.

The incident occurred late Sunday night, according to a police report. He was later in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Police responded to the apartment and found one man standing over another man applying pressure to the victim’s gunshot wound, which entered the victim’s stomach and exited in his back, according to the police report.

A dispatcher told officers that the victim had “shot himself.”

As ambulance personnel treated the victim, police spoke with the person who assisted the victim and learned that he heard a gunshot while he was in the kitchen.

The man found the victim on the couch holding his stomach. The witness said the victim told him he was trying to get the pistol out of his pocket when he accidentally shot himself.

The pistol was located in a drawer in the back hallway of the apartment. Police recovered it. Police also found a baggie in the apartment containing possible drugs. Inside of it were smaller bags containing white and gray powders and unknown pills.

Police later learned the firearm was reported stolen. Police officers tried to speak to the victim, but he could not talk to officers because he was in surgery, the report states.
