Driver accused of aiming car at pedestrian

YOUNGSTOWN — A man, 41, was arrested early Monday in an incident on Wesley Avenue on the West Side in which he is accused of trying to hit another man with a car and ramming another car.

The incident was at 1:40 a.m. Officers were called to Wesley Avenue for a fight. A male 911 caller said a man in a blue Ford Escape tried to hit him. Then the car hit a vehicle in the Dollar Tree parking lot on Mahoning Avenue before fleeing the scene, according to a Youngstown police report.

Officers saw the Escape sideways on nearby Rhoda Avenue near Mahoning Avenue. The 41-year-old man was approaching the vehicle on foot. He said he had just been in an altercation on Wesley Avenue involving a woman and her ex-boyfriend.

The woman drove her Escape toward a Wesley address to check on her children but first pulled into the Dollar Tree, where the 41-year-old man’s ex-boyfriend pulled into the Dollar Tree lot and began ramming the woman’s Ford Escape, the man said.

The woman got out of the Escape and ran to Wesley Avenue to check on her children, the 41-year-old man in the Escape said.

Police spoke to a man at the Wesley address who said he and the woman in the Ford Escape had an argument in the preceding days, and she had left the Wesley address. He was apparently the woman’s ex-boyfriend, but the police report is not clear on that.

The man packed all of her things into his truck and intended to drop them off at a North Brockway Avenue address that night “to be done with her,” he said.

But he saw that she was at the Brockway address, so he drove quickly back to the Wesley address because he had left his children, ages 6 and 2 1/2, home alone.

When he got home, he saw a vehicle driving through the yard and trying to hit him as he stood on his driveway, the report states. He did not see who was driving and did not describe the car but said the vehicle then went to the Dollar General parking lot and hit another car.

The woman who was alleged to be driving the Escape said the 41-year-old man was driving the Escape. Officers concluded it was the 41-year-old man who was driving based on a series of factors.

The 41-year-old man was charged with felonious assault, but his name does not appear in Youngstown Municipal Court under any new charges. The man who left his children home alone was charged with misdemeanor child endangering, the report states, but his name does not appear in the police report.
