Children unharmed in drive-by shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — Police say three children were awoken when their home was the target of a drive-by shooting early Thursday. All three are unharmed.

The Youngstown police report states that an officer was sitting in the parking lot of St. Nicholas Church’s Byzantine Center at the Grove on Shady Run Road about 2 a.m. Thursday when he heard several gunshots from the area of Inverness Avenue.

Police found 16 rounds in front of 1137 Inverness and six more in front of 1161 Inverness. The report states the officer did not see the vehicle involved when he arrived, but a surveillance camera at 1137 Inverness showed he arrived only seconds after the car passed the house, with someone shooting out of the passenger’s side window and another person on foot behind the car also shooting toward the house.

A Ford truck in the driveway took a bullet to the windshield, and police found several bullet holes in the front of the house, but the children inside the home were unharmed. The children told police they woke up to the sound of gunfire, but did not see anything.

They said their mother was on her way home. When she arrived, she and officers looked at the video of the shooting. She told police she could not be sure how many rounds had hit the house because it has been the target of other shootings.

The report states that the house “has been a nuisance with gunfire, fights and stolen autos recovered near it.”

The vehicle in the video was a Kia Optima that, the report states, police believe may be the same vehicle stolen from a home on Bellfield Avenue on the city’s South Side about 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. That theft also was caught on surveillance camera.
